You may have heard the saying that ‘you play the way you train’. A fellow runner recently commented that doing long, slow runs had turned him into a slow runner.
One of my aims is to run my half marathon faster, so this means adding some speed to my training. At the same time I need to be careful not to push myself too hard too soon as this has led to injury in the past.
Luckily Steve Moneghetti’s Trained by Champs program includes a graduated series of what he calls ‘effort runs’, so I have been including some of these in my regular runs.
These are a form of interval training. To reduce the risk of injury they all have a warm up and warm down component of one to two kilometres. The effort aspect consists of a 500m spurt followed by 500m of recovery.
By incorporating these effort runs into my regular training runs I can already see an improvement in my times and I hope to continue this with more repetitions in weeks to come.
The 2018 Busselton Half Marathon and Fun Run is only 17 weeks away now so I need to get a hurry on!
