So here I am just twelve weeks out from the start of the Busselton Half Marathon and about to begin my Trained By Champs program…and I am injured. Not a serious injury – only a mild hamstring strain, but enough to keep me off the track for a week or two. As usual it was caused by a combination of failing to stretch or warm up enough and trying to run too fast, too soon, in this case as part of a club event on the weekend.
Luckily Steve Moneghetti’s Trained by Champs program builds up gradually and includes plenty of warm-up and cool down suggestions. Having rested and iced my hamstring for a few days, I am going to start off by walking through the initial stages of the program, while also doing some swimming and strengthening exercises.
Like most runners, I have been through similar periods before and returned to enjoy more running and exercise. It just takes a bit longer and a bit more patience as you get older, but it is worth the effort.
Hopefully this is just a small hiccup on my way from here to half!!
