The countdown continues with just ten weeks remaining before the Busselton Running Club’s Half Marathon I am still nursing a dodgy hamstring and feeling just a bit jealous of all the super-fit iron persons in Busselton this week.
While initially hoping to finish in under two hours, I am now looking to build up gradually and complete the distance comfortably and without further injury.
This reminds me of the time I was doing the Bunbury City to Surf with my father. Approaching the Hastie Street hill at around the 7km mark he remarked that he might ease off a bit as he had recently had some heart trouble.
This changed my perspective from being a competitor to being a concerned son. I quickly adjusted my own pace to sit on his shoulder and follow him safely to the finish line.
This injury has been frustrating and the timing is far from ideal, but it calls for patience in recovery and common sense in goal-setting.
As a no-longer-young runner, I need to listen to my body and work within my limits. This is not something that I like to admit, and I will still look to set new challenges, but they need to be more measured.
For now, February 10th is approaching very rapidly indeed!
