The last week has been a test of patience for me as I gradually return to running after a minor hamstring strain.
Being able to run again, albeit slowly, is such a joy that it is tempting to push harder and risk doing more damage. I have to force myself to remember that slow and steady wins the race.
An important part of the Trained by Champions program put together Steve Moneghetti is the concept of active recovery days.
These days allow for recovery after more demanding sessions of interval training or hill work, but they are useful when recovering from injury too. Instead of running every day, I have been doing more swimming, cycling and walking. Steve recommends sessions on the cross trainer and yoga and stretching activities too.
I have also been using this down-time to shed a few kilos in an effort to reduce the stress on my joints when I do get back into some more intense training. With the Christmas holidays rapidly approaching I am hoping to get back into some more serious running before I indulge myself too much!
February 10th is now less than two months away so time is running out fast!
