As it heats up over Christmas and New Year, it is important as a runner to keep the fluids up, not just during a run but throughout the day.
Steve Moneghetti’s Trained by Champions program contains a lot of good advice about nutrition and hydration and I am looking forward to hearing more from Steve at the pre-event dinner on February 9th next year (Have you got your tickets yet?).
For myself, I often plan my runs ‘around a tap’ or water stop. There are several filtered water stations along the foreshore in Busselton that make this easier, but there are other ways to achieve a similar result. Running out and back past a home base or water drop-off point is an obvious solution.
There are also a number of camelback devices and running belts with water bottles that can also serve the purpose for hydration on the run, especially if you are training on trails.
The recent Busselton Ironman showed the impact of inadequate hydration, with numerous competitors having to withdraw, so make sure not to push yourself too hard in this department.
My Christmas wish for everyone is for a well hydrated, injury free holiday season shared with family and fellow runners!
